Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
