EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
