A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
